If you've already tried the serums, the vitamin C, even a gentler prescription, and your melasma is still there, this is where you go next.

Built with prescription hydroquinone, which blocks the enzyme that produces melanin and remains the gold standard for stubborn melasma. Alongside kojic acid to slow new pigment formation, tretinoin to accelerate cell turnover, and niacinamide to keep maximum-strength treatment comfortable.

Formulations

Every formulation uses the same four actives. What changes is the balance between hydroquinone and tretinoin, so a board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team can match the formula to your pigmentation and your skin's tolerance. Kojic acid and niacinamide stay at the same strength across all three.

You do not choose your formulation. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team sets it from your assessment.

How & Why It Works
  • Hydroquinone blocks the enzyme that produces melanin
  • Kojic acid slows new pigment formation through a second pathway
  • Tretinoin speeds cell turnover to lift pigment sitting near the surface

  • Niacinamide supports the skin barrier through a maximum-strength protocol
  • Used in planned cycles with dermatologist oversight rather than continuously
  • Compounded by a licensed pharmacy for each prescription

This formula combines prescription tretinoin with hydroquinone, so some people notice mild, temporary effects as their skin adjusts. These are typically short-lived and manageable with simple care steps.

Common adjustment effects can include mild dryness, peeling, itching, or redness. Applying a fragrance-free moisturizer helps soothe irritation, and most people find their skin settles within the first 2 to 4 weeks. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team reviews your case and sets a formulation appropriate for your skin.

Daily SPF matters more with hydroquinone than with almost any other active. Without consistent sun protection, hydroquinone use can paradoxically worsen pigmentation, which is why daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is part of the treatment rather than an optional extra.

How to Use

After cleansing, wait at least 20 minutes for your skin to dry fully. Apply a thin layer in the evening. A pea-sized amount is enough for the full face. More is not better, and using more can cause peeling without improving results.

Start with every other night for the first one to two weeks, then increase to nightly as your skin tolerates it. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will set your ramp-up plan.

Follow with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin comfortable as it adjusts.

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen, minimum SPF 30, every morning. Hydroquinone-treated skin is significantly more sensitive to sun, and without daily protection hydroquinone can worsen pigmentation rather than fade it.

Because this formula contains hydroquinone, treatment runs in cycles. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will set your schedule, typically a period of active use followed by a planned break. During breaks, you may step down to The Dark Spot SolutionRx for maintenance. Do not continue past your prescribed cycle without direction.

  • Most people see visible changes in 8 to 12 weeks with consistent use
  • One bottle is approximately a two-month supply

The clinical team

The medicine behind your prescription is built by the doctors you already follow.

The Brightening Solution Rx wasn't pulled from a generic template. Its protocol was designed by Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky, Dr. Mamina Turegano, and Dr. Jenny Liu, three board-certified dermatologists with combined decades of clinical experience treating women whose melasma has resisted every brightening serum, peel, and laser they've tried.

Your prescription is then written by a board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team, working from the protocol they built. Dermatologist-built medicine, delivered to your door.

What to expect

The strongest prescription for melasma. Built to work where others didn't.

Applying brightening treatment to melasma-prone skin

The Brightening Solution Rx stacks four actives, with hydroquinone leading the work. Hydroquinone directly inhibits the enzyme that produces melanin, and it remains the standard of care for deep, stubborn melasma. Kojic acid works alongside it to slow new pigment formation. Tretinoin drives the cell turnover that lifts existing pigmentation. Niacinamide reduces irritation and helps make a maximum-strength formula livable for ongoing protocols. Four ingredients working at the same time, on the same problem, because for deep, resistant melasma one active was never going to be enough.

  • Four actives selected for stubborn-looking pigmentation from four different angles
  • The only formula in our lineup with prescription hydroquinone
  • Used in cycles with clinical oversight, the protocol that keeps it effective long-term
  • Built for pigmentation that hasn't responded to gentler protocols
  • For when you've already tried everything else
Applying brightening treatment to melasma-prone skin

Built for the woman whose melasma hasn't budged.

The Brightening Solution Rx is our maximum-strength melasma prescription, built around hydroquinone, the standard of care for deep, stubborn melasma. It's the right fit if your pigmentation has resisted other treatments, runs deep, or covers larger areas of your face. Because hydroquinone requires careful protocols, a board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will guide you through a cycling regimen of active periods followed by planned breaks.

Ideal for you if you're:

  • Dealing with deep or persistent melasma that hasn't responded to gentler treatments.

  • Looking for a stronger prescription with hydroquinone for faster pigment correction.

  • Experiencing discoloration that covers larger areas of the face.

  • Ready for a maximum-strength brightening protocol with cycling, as confirmed during your assessment.

  • Comfortable with planned breaks between treatment cycles, as directed by our clinical team.

Consider a different fit if you're:

  • Pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive. Hydroquinone and tretinoin are not safe during pregnancy

  • New to prescription melasma treatment. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team may want to start you on The Dark Spot SolutionRx first

  • Looking for a long-term continuous formula without cycling. The Dark Spot SolutionRx is built for that

  • Dealing with post-acne marks that are pink or red rather than brown. Those are post-inflammatory erythema, and The Red Mark Solutionᴿˣ is built for that

  • Have a known allergy or sensitivity to hydroquinone

  • Using oral isotretinoin (Accutane) or have used it in the past 6 months

  • On other prescription brightening protocols that are working. Talk to a board-certified dermatologist before changing

  • Unable or unwilling to wear daily broad-spectrum SPF. Hydroquinone treatment is not safe without it

  • Someone with a history of ochronosis from previous hydroquinone use

What our customers are saying.

Realistic timeline

What you may see in 8–12 weeks.

Hydroquinone acts directly on the enzyme that produces pigment. Here's what most people experience with consistent use, daily SPF, and the cycling protocol a board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team sets.

Results vary. Timelines depend on your starting skin, your formula strength, and how consistently you apply your treatment.

1

Weeks 1–2

Adjustment

Your skin gets used to a maximum-strength prescription. Dryness, mild peeling, and temporary sensitivity are common during the first 2 to 4 weeks. Your DermClick care team can adjust your application frequency if needed.
2

Weeks 3–6

Visible fading

Surface pigmentation softens noticeably. Tone begins to look more even, particularly in deeper melasma patches that haven't responded to other treatments. This is the point most people feel the formula is working.
3

Weeks 7–12

Meaningful correction

Deep pigmentation looks meaningfully lighter. Tone is more uniform across treated areas. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will set the timing of your first cycling break based on your response.
4

Cycling protocol

Maintenance with planned breaks

Hydroquinone-based treatment typically uses a cycling protocol of active periods followed by planned breaks, to support long-term safety. Your DermClick care team will design the schedule that fits your skin. During breaks, you may step down to The Dark Spot Solutionᴿˣ for maintenance.

Results vary. Timelines depend on your starting skin, your formula strength, and how consistently you apply your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is hydroquinone considered the gold standard?

Hydroquinone directly inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme your pigment cells use to produce melanin. It has been the standard of care for stubborn melasma for decades, which is why it remains the reference active for pigmentation that hasn't responded to gentler protocols.

Other brightening actives work at different points in the same process. Tranexamic acid calms the signals that trigger pigment production upstream. Kojic acid slows melanin formation through a second pathway. Niacinamide reduces how much pigment transfers between skin cells. Hydroquinone acts on the enzyme itself, which is what makes it the stronger option when pigment is deep or already established.

If you want pigment correction without hydroquinone, The Dark Spot SolutionRx is built around tranexamic acid and can be used continuously without cycling.

Should I start with this or The Dark Spot Solutionᴿˣ?

It depends on your pigmentation and on what you have already tried.

If you are new to prescription brightening, or your pigmentation is mild, a board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will usually start you on The Dark Spot SolutionRx. It works continuously with no cycling required.

If your pigmentation is deep, has already resisted other treatments, or covers larger areas of your face, The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ is likely the right starting point.

Moderate pigmentation can go either way, and the deciding factor is usually your treatment history. If gentler options have not been tried yet, starting there is common. If they have been tried without result, hydroquinone is the next step. Your assessment determines which one fits.

What's the cycling protocol and why is it required?

Hydroquinone works by suppressing melanin production, and continuous use without breaks increases the risk of side effects, including ochronosis, a paradoxical darkening of the skin that can be difficult to reverse. Cycling is how that risk is managed.

DermClick's protocol follows standard clinical guidance: a period of active use followed by a planned break. A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will set your specific schedule based on your response and your skin history. During breaks, you may step down to The Dark Spot SolutionRx, which contains no hydroquinone and can be used continuously.

Do not continue past your prescribed cycle without direction from our clinical team.

Can I use this with other actives in my routine?

Most of your routine can stay. Gentle cleansers, fragrance-free moisturizers, and daily broad-spectrum SPF all pair well with The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ.

What you should pause: other retinoids, since you are already getting prescription tretinoin; any other product containing hydroquinone; benzoyl peroxide in the same step, since it can deactivate tretinoin and discolor when combined with hydroquinone; hydrogen peroxide products in the application area; high-concentration alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids; and products containing resorcinol.

Pause waxing, laser treatments, and chemical peels on treated areas for at least one week before and one week after the procedure.

A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will review your routine during your assessment.

What if my pigmentation looks darker at first?

Some people notice pigmentation looking darker before it looks lighter. Temporary darkening is usually associated with insufficient sun protection, which is why daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is the single most important habit during treatment.

Stop applying and contact your DermClick care team if the darkening appears bluish or gray, or has a different color quality than your original melasma. That can be a sign of ochronosis and needs to be reviewed.

Can I use this during pregnancy?

No. The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ contains both hydroquinone and tretinoin, neither of which is recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Melasma is extremely common during pregnancy, often called the mask of pregnancy, but it requires a pregnancy-safe approach, typically daily broad-spectrum SPF and trigger avoidance, with treatment starting after delivery and after breastfeeding ends.

If you are already using The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ and your pregnancy status changes, contact your DermClick care team immediately. If you are not yet a customer, our support team can help you plan timing.

Will my melasma come back when I stop?

Possibly. Melasma is chronic, driven by hormones, UV exposure, and genetics, and it tends to return whenever those triggers are active.

The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ is used in cycles, with maintenance on The Dark Spot SolutionRx during breaks. Daily SPF and trigger avoidance reduce the rate of return. Some people see lasting reduction, others use ongoing cycling to keep pigmentation managed.

A board-certified dermatologist on our clinical team will set realistic expectations based on your case.

Is hydroquinone safe for long-term use?

Hydroquinone is not designed for continuous, uninterrupted use. That is why The Brightening Solutionᴿˣ is prescribed with a cycling protocol rather than as an ongoing daily treatment.

The risks documented with hydroquinone are associated with unsupervised use, continuous use without breaks, high concentrations, and inadequate sun protection. Cycling guidance, dermatologist check-ins, daily SPF, and the option to step down to The Dark Spot SolutionRx during off-cycles are how the protocol is structured to manage those risks.
